Surfing in Oregon? Seriously? To ride the waves here is to reconfirm the adventurer in you. So be bold and get to our local surf shops, ready with nice rental equipment (boogie boards, surfboards, wetsuits, bodyboards, skimboards, kayaks) and advice. Surf camps and various levels of lessons from certified instructors last from 2 to 3 hours, focus on ocean safety and knowledge as well as surfing skills.
Excellent public golf courses include Gearhart Golf Links (12 miles north, Oregon’s oldest golf course, opened in 1892), Manzanita Golf Course (15 miles south), and Highlands Golf Course (14 miles north).
At the south edge of town, Tolovana Beach is a day use year-round recreation site for miles of beach walking, kite flying, beach horseback riding, paragliding, kiteboarding, surf fishing, picnicking, birdwatching and photography.
Dig for razor clams, go crabbing (December through September), or book a charter fishing trip during seasonal runs of steelhead and salmon. Always good to contact a local sporting goods shop to get updates on seasons and licenses.
