Take pictures, watch the crashing waves, enjoy the drama!
Stick a piece of wood in the sand and watch how long it takes for the incoming waves to pass over it (oh yeah, by the way, it’s a bummer to watch your carefully crafted sandcastle succumb to the tides).
Regardless of the season however, we must offer a word about safety during high tide (or low tide too, for that matter). Remember that the beach can be fun but is not a swimming pool. Make sure to always keep an eye towards the ocean and watch for the tide rolling in and anything coming in with it.
Be aware of sneaker waves. They rush up on the shore without warning and carry enough force to knock you down and drag you out to sea. Always (especially if you’re with children or pets) keep your eyes on the ocean.
Beware of rip currents. They can form on any beach that has breaking waves. A rip current will have dark muddy water and be very choppy. If caught in a rip current swim parallel to the beach to get away from the strong “river of water” that is heading directly out to sea.
