Workshop Description: Students will have the opportunity to think outside the box, using a variety of tools and everyday household items to create unique, layers of imagery and unusual marks on both cloth and paper. We will explore mono-printing using gel plates and acrylic paint and ink, adding layers with stenciling and stamps. These one-of-a-kind papers and cloth will then be used to create greeting cards and collaged art pieces including a hanging bird “sculpture”

All artistic levels welcome in class,  no experience is necessary.
All materials will be provided for class use.  Canvas and papers will be available.

Janet Nelson Hutchings
Janet fabric artist, is originally from San Diego, California where she was a member of Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. Taught to sew by her grandmother, Hutchings created clothing for years. Janet now creates quilted landscapes and photographs, mixed media pieces and home décor items using fabric, thread, paint, ink, wood, and just about anything else that enhances the piece.

When commercially-printed fabrics no longer suited her needs, Janet learned to paint and dye fabrics, adapting mark-making techniques typically used on paper. She also prints her own landscape and animal photos on several types of fabric then quilt the images and adds further embellishment to bring out the details and give her work a more three-dimensional look.

Mixed media collage has always fascinated Janet. Starting with unusual bases, creating transparent layers of paper and fabric, and tying everything together with a quote or a few words has become a new art challenge for her. She is primarily self-taught, using books, seminars and trial and error as she honed her skills. Her art has evolved from simple quilted designs to the art pieces that she creates today. Her work can be found at Tempo Gallery in Astoria, Trail’s End Art Association in Gearhart and occasionally on her website
