Learn the basics of the ancient medium of printmaking for the first time or hone
your existing skills and knowledge. In this 2-hour workshop, the fundamentals of
monotype printmaking will be explored. Tidepool and ocean creatures, beach
vistas, flora, and fauna are among the many inspirations found in the natural world
Seascape of Cannon Beach. Students will create several one-of-a-kind monoprints using the additive or “light-field” technique. You’ll be guided through a painterly process of applying paint or ink directly to a printing plate, transferring the painted image to a piece of paper, rubbing it, and then pulling the printed paper from the plate to reveal the transferred image. Alternately, when experimenting with the subtractive, or “dark-field” technique, the plate is covered with a layer of ink or paint, and the image is formed by manipulating and removing the ink or paint using various tools, including brushes, rags, or your fingers. Each plate typically yields one monotype, but subsequent pulls (sometimes called ghost impressions because of their relative faintness) can be made from the residual mediums on the plate.
